The Cagayan de Oro City Disaster where my girl lives!

Well that typhoon caused havoc in Cagayan de Oro City, I got a facebook message friday to say she was moving out and packing and her family. Then their was black no facebook contact for 48 hours now. I managed to call her phone skype for 10 seconds then her battery died. Called her today on a crackly line for 15 mins and she and all her family ok, thanks to God for that, but I do miss her mails and I feel a lot closer to her knowing I could have lost her to the floods and so many sadly perished.
Thanks for this site such a good help, espceially about the 21 days issue as it seems I need only have 10 days their and not 21 days which would delay any hope of being married in 1.5 years with the ammount of leave i get.

It's a sad situation, and I feel for all those families affected. Unfortunately the government really is behind the curve on this, too much money being milked off the people instead of into infrastructure and flood defences etc.

I mentioned in another thread our family members and friends are all safe.
But our family lost their home and everything. All they now own is what they are wearing and carrying.
Make no mistake this is a terrible and huge tragedy

Ricky, our family and friends do not blame the govt or local authorities. This was a completely 'rogue' event.
Everyone we have contact to have all praised the local authorities for a well organised effort that helped many but was never going to be able to do much more than counter the very worst of this freak event.

It's just too easy to place blame here.

Such things can and do happen anywhere in the world (even here in UK) , and any official govt plan can be jumped upon on as being inadequate by those who are ill-informed and not impacted.

Sorry! Terpe that is terrible, only consolation is that they are alive. All of our family is okay, but my wife is worried about friends. One lives right on the beach, near to where we have a small lot.

Ricky, my apologies if I sounded overly fractious. It wasn't my intention mate. I'm just a bit wound up at the moment. Carina has been attempting to contact friends and family all day and all communications are very sporadic.
We cancelled a Birthday get together tonight due to this. We promised to attend but it seems the reasons for our cancellation is not well received. Bloody typical.!!

I need to send some money asap and getting all the logistics planned is getting to be a major problem.
Technology is wonderful when it works. Otherwise..................

No member who has read your posts on two threads could possibly be offended, Peter ( Terpe ), what you have said is heartfelt from one of many members who have connections with Mindanao.
This is a disaster, the consequences of which are still evolving. We know that the 20 or so typhoons and storms to affect the Philippines each year almost always affect the north. Unsurprisingly therefore, despite warnings allegedly given 3 days before the storm made landfall, many were unprepared for its severity. The mayor of Cagayan de Oro said " This is the first time this has happened in our city ".
It's too early to even think about allocating blame. Britain and its airports grind to a halt with 2" of snow - because it doesn't happen as often as it used to, or as predictably as in other countries. Any UK hospital on its own may be unable to cope with a major accident. Questions arise as to how many precious resources can be available to prepare for rare disasters.
In time, there may be criticism that not enough has been done to prepare for or respond to these Philippines floods.
But already there are responses at all levels. Peter and other individuals are doing what they can, all credit to you Doctors, nurses and other health workers are responding, as are the Philippines National Red Cross, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, and thousands of soldiers have been mobilised. US Secretary State Hillary Clinton said the " US is ready to help " and the Chinese Embassy has promised $10,000 towards relief efforts.
Of course this couldn't have happened at a worst time, in the run up to Christmas. Sadly Christmas is not " merry " for many people. Even without a major disaster like this one, individuals still have mixed feelings with memories of loved ones no longer with them, bad news such as a diagnosis of cancer, or worries about finance. Don't feel guilty if you can enjoy Christmas - last night's members' " get together " in Derby was enjoyed by all - but count your blessings if you do !

My own family lives in the area where the flood hits. I also went into panic and been stressed out when i tried to contact them. I was able to phone my sister at the peak of them evacuating to the higher ground which is the road actually. She's not able to answer the phone as they are fleeing with the water up to their armpits I can hear the scream and shouting as will as crying of the people while I'm talking to her on the mobile, Everything on the lower portion of our house were washed out. Water had reached the second portion of our house. They ran barefoot as they could not locate their sleepers and shoes, pitch dark as the electrict current was cut off already. I'm just glad that the rewindable flashlight bought by my husband here in the uk at aldi's was there and they used it to lit there way. Though most of our things perished I'm just glad their alright, but I'm still sad cause so many of my co barangay people had lost their lives. Such a great tragedy specially it's christmas soon. The devastation really made me cry.

Thanks guys for al lyour input , I have to admit I did cry too for the sadness i saw on the news and o a man who lost his wife and two children, :( I thought what i feel like if it had been my Angeline? Very hurt! I hope and pray some good comes out of this disaster and families comforted and helped by aid etc.

Hi Terpe, well my girl is not yet my g/f although i am sure she wants to be right now we are very close friends, holding back the emotions a bit until we acually meet, prob in June that gives 4 months to see how we are growing to each other, and then 4 months to sort the holiday out for there.

That must have been very upsetting for you, hearing it on your phone and being helpless here.

so sorry for your loss, Terpe, my condolence.......in our part we may not be greatly affected by the typhoon but we are all in our toes, we sleep late just to hear the update on the situation in Mindanao. I have relatives in Iligan and we dont have news from them, I only pray that they were able to move to a safer place.

im so sorry for all the people who have been hit by the storm and my condolences to all who have lost their loved ones. i also have friends who lost their homes and loved ones from this disaster. i hope that they can recover soon. let's help them in their recovery through donations.
