Ok I will ask a question. Why do we need skilled workers from abroad?

Good question Andy and on a topic that I see and have seen in my industry.

The reason why I am working in the Isle of Man is that they can't find anyone to do what I do, here on the island.

It works in a similar way in the oil industry in the UK.

I agree that we (the UK) should be training up our own people but that can take a long time, perhaps even decades.

Having said that, I am not denying that this route cant be abused as my previous employer seemed to have a tendency to do that in the interest of keeping their costs down.

maybe the gov should force the unis to provide courses where there are shortages of skilled workers even subsidize the course,

remember not long ago the 'in' degree was in many cases the useless psychology degree and even more pointless degrees, even my niece did a 'combined' french/psychology degree

There appears to be a shortage of Engineers. But not every youngster wants to do Engineering.

I'm sure many of those who spent 3 or 4 yrs doing a psychology degree or some other degree regret doing it now and wished they had known what areas the job shortages were in, so they wouldn't be unemployed now

It's a strange thing as there appears to have been a shortage of Engineering graduates for decades.

I reckon a government subsidy on those kinds of courses would help or a discount on fees.

There are plenty of engineers in this country Lastlid believe me but you answered the question (cheap labour).

There is clearly a need for Psychology graduates but only so many needed of course. Theres a heap of other soft option degree courses about.

Examples including David Beckam Studies , courtesy of Wikipedia:

"In 2000, Staffordshire University was mocked as providing 'David Beckham Studies' because it provided a module on the sociological importance of football to students taking sociology, sports science or media studies.

I have no idea if this happens in schools - if it does not, then they are missing a huge trick - but schools careers advice should contain regular stats from industry, as to where the biggest shortages are, and exactly what courses/training would be appropriate to get into this line of business.

Of course they may not be jobs the kids want to pursue - not everyone wants to be an engineer, and it seems few want to be a maths teacher (Bet there are hundreds trying to be geography teachers though )

I am actually a little bitter that my school was so absolutely bloody useless when it came to careers advice. Not everyone has parents who can advise, and if you had no idea, then you were cast adrift.

    Hey, it's just an idea.

Ok I have another suggestion for government.

Instead of trying to limit immigration - which may or may not be a good thing, many people who come here love the place, love our values and want to work their backsides off to make a better life for themselves.
Instead of stopping them - how about encouraging outward migration. I suggest we especially target certain groups - ones who think our benefit system is the "free bank", whose only contribution is to the crime and birth rate, and who seem to have a problem with our free secular society?

A spell in Siberia working in the salt mines as guests of the Russian army should sort them out
let the criminals ask about human rights there and it would save alot of taxpayers money..

    useless degrees

Star Trek – Georgetown University in Washington
The Science of Harry Potter – Frostburg University

    Queer Musicology – UCLA
Due to seemingly popular demand, the UCLA have actually combined queer theory – the study of gender, feminism and gayness – with the science of music, to produce a very open-minded course within their Herb Alpert School of Music. The LA Times reported that the course will introduce debates like: “the idea that if you’re gay, then music by gay composers such as Benjamin Britten will sound different to you than it would if you were straight.”

I was listening to the Welsh first minister talking the other day and he was saying how he would be trying to make their educational establishments tailor courses towards what will be needed when Hitachi start up their new plant in Wales. I thought this made alot of sense and perhaps this is the way forward regionally tailored courses.
