Brian, I think that's a key issue. 50 is just too young to retire with nothing to do.
When I finally get there I've got all sorts of plans and ideas to keep busy.
Have you considered doing some volunteering work?

never volunteered for work as i said i,ll go back on the road back in the u.k for a while and see how I feel maybe try and shake off the blues .I know whats gonna happen i,ll get back home then want to scurry off back to p h when the cold weather kicks in again

Have you thought about splitting your time here and there even if your lady can't get a visa?
I know a couple of members here do just that. Seems to work for them

if we don,t get a visa it will be the only option and split the time but I don,t really want to come back without my little angel lol

It was something I was going to do a while back. .take on a mortgage over there. .buying a nice house for immediate family. .I was going to spend 3 months of the year in Philippines splitting it thrice over the year. ..I worked out we would get more quality time as a family than if we stayed here in UK. I'd then be able to retire at 65 and have a big lovely house all bought and paid for over there in Manila. .Jerusalem street near to the airport.
It's not an obligation to live in the gutter. When you first hook up with a new chick you cld live anywhere. .lunch on chickens intestines and delicious chickens feet morning day and night. .that novelty wears thin after a while, I can tell you.
The inactivity got to me. .I enjoy my work i can't ever imagine not working. .yes you can work in the Philippines. .not quite the same as working here for a solid wage each month.
Still, horses for courses. ..my line of work is still in demand here so I'm only giving my perspective.

Only experience will tell you what's what. You can't base the rest of your days on the back of having 2 or 3 holidays there 2 weeks at a time.
We don't know the whole story of other folks. .the reasons behind leaving UK at a productive age.
I'm basing my comments on spending 18 months there over a 6 year period.
