... badly~composed letters are rarely (if ever!) the hallmarks of a proper businesslike approach, and that factor, in itself, would certainly put me off from the start as regards the legitimacy of the outfit concerned.

I would, of course, echo the doubts already expressed by my friends, urging BOTH you and your husband to be very, very cautious in ANY further dealings you're likely to have with the Company you've mentioned ... most especially bearing in mind that NO LEGITIMATE employer should expect job applicants to part with money in advance without a good, valid reason for doing so.
