It’s not for the faint of heart or those with queasy stomachs. But eight New Yorkers are out to make competitive eating history when they signed up for the First ‘Balut’-Eating Contest to be held on August 25 in Brooklyn.

Ermmmm do family of girlfriends really try giving you this in some sort of "lets make fun of the westerner initiation test" things, or is that just an urban legend.

I have eaten deep fried scorpion, yak gonads, sea cucumber and heaven knows what else, and I actually grew to like snake, but include me out of balut!
No, it's not an urban legend, and most Filipinos and Filipinas really do like it... but there are lots of other ways to make the visiting westerner cringe, and the Filipinos are a kind hearted nation and will usually settle for one of the others...

When I said something about it being a bit 'rubbery' everyone laughed.

I've lived in Japan for a long time, and visited China and Korea extensively so eaten all sorts of very odd stuff.
Balut is just too an image too far. haha
The article doesn't say anything about contestants making sure they drink plenty of San Mig first to help them forget what they're doing.....! That's the only way I got to try one. The one and only balut of my life, I reckon....
